Job Title: DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER – MO3 TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Salary: £43,292 to £47,380 plus a Location allowance of £1,639. You will receive £43,292 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £47,380 will be via incremental progression.

We can’t say much here, for obvious reasons, but we can promise you’ll work with emerging technologies to deliver bespoke electronic and ICT solutions for operational use by police officers in the field.

 

Technology, Research and Innovation (TRI) are part of Operational Technology within the Met Operations 3 command and are responsible for keeping the MPS at the forefront of new and emerging technologies. As a Development Engineer, you’ll producing unique solutions to solve business issues relating to some of the more specialist and sensitive parts of the MPS and National Policing. Your work will be highly innovative and will involve exploring new off-the-shelf tech, taking existing products and modifying them, and developing entirely new solutions. You’ll also have the opportunity to carry out research, working with academia to inform new solutions and possibilities. From bespoke IT systems and apps to electronic solutions, you’ll oversee the full lifecycle of each project with our customers.

 

Your responsibilities will be varied and will involve working effectively and efficiently on your own and as part of a larger project team. You’ll managing tasks and team members – using your excellent communications skills and technology expertise. You’ll need to be confident in C#, Javascript or C/C++ and to have experience of MVC framework, .NET Core or Node.js. You should also be comfortable using command-line Linux. Possess maker/creator dexterity and proficiency handling the latest tools, along with practical experience in design and manufacture, will be essentials too.

 

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) level before taking up the post; with a willingness to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) once in post, if required.

    Skills

    • Good communication competences including the ability to easily translate business needs into technical requirements.

    Experience in the following areas:

    Essential

    • Software development using at least one of the following languages: C#, Javascript or C/C++
    • Experience of at least one MVC framework or technology (for example, .NET Core, Node.js)
    • Comfortable with using command-line Linux
    • Knowledge of, or exposure to, version control practices
    • Ability to both engage within a team and work under their own steam
    • Willingness to embrace and adopt emerging technologies and frameworks

     

    Desirable

    • A desire and interest to keep up to date with emerging technologies
    • Working within an Agile team
    • General electro-mechanical skills
    • Experience with, or interest to learn, a modern Javascript framework (e.g. Vue, Express.js)
    • SQL (SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
    • Mobile application development (e.g. Xamarin Forms, Android SDK)
    • Machine learning (Python, tensorflow)
    • Working with cloud platforms (e.g. Azure)
    • Migrating older code to newer technologies
    • Physical and virtual infrastructure engineering
    • Network architecting and system administration
    • Security and technology (vulnerability analysis, pen-testing, ethical hacking)
    • Software-defined radios
    • Devops/CI/CD pipeline tooling (Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform)
    • TDD/Unit testing

     

    Membership of a professional institution

    Full clean UK driving license.

    Willingness to drive MPS vehicles

     

    You will be required to undertake security clearance to MV/SC level in order to perform this role and to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) once in post, as required.
