Job Title: Internal Communication Manager

Salary: £37,569 to £45,189 plus a Location allowance of £1,639. You will receive £37,569 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £45,189 will be via incremental progression.

Location: New Scotland Yard with Hybrid working

 

The Directorate of Media and Communications (DMC) is the Metropolitan Police Service in-house communication function and is arguably one of the busiest and exciting communication teams in London.

The department operates around the clock to deliver impactful communications that help to keep people safe, keep over 40,000 police officers and staff informed; and deliver the Met’s vision to make London the safest global city.

We are looking for brilliant Internal Communication Managers to join our internal team and help deliver the Met’s most important work to-date. The Met and its people have an abundance of fascinating stories to tell and incredible content to showcase through our established internal channels.

  Accountable for:

  • To plan, manage, deliver, and evaluate communications activity in delivery of the DMC communication strategy, working with the leads in the business groups, Transformation Directorate programme teams, Internal Communication Business Partners, and channels team
  • To take the lead on a small number of major campaigns during the year, from its genesis – brief taking, campaign development and planning, delivery and evaluation
  • Oversee the delivery of smaller tactical campaigns and communications
  • Ensuring content and messaging is clear and reaches target audiences internally
  • Work closely with other colleagues in DMC to ensure that strategies and plans are integrated

 Responsibilities:

  • Develop, deliver and evaluate coherent and effective communications that engage the Met’s officers and staff
  • Developing messaging, content and products for campaigns
  • Communications activity will include developing content in house and occasionally liaising with agencies, devising creative briefs, managing design and production within budget, and always ensuring quality and value for money
  • Use creative thinking to source and/or develop images, infographics, video, and other products as required, and ensure all assets e.g., images, video, audio etc. are managed appropriately
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with a range of stakeholders to support delivery of communications, working collaboratively within own team and across the organisation
  • Monitor own and colleagues’ work against plans and milestones and act promptly to ensure activity stays on track and outcomes are delivered
  • Be responsible for the evaluation, measurement and monitoring of campaigns /activity, keeping stakeholders informed of progress and impact, and use this information to drive continual improvement and development
  • Understand and ensure the Met’s brand, digital and editorial standards and guidelines and communication standards are adhered to
  • Take ownership for the evaluation of strategies, plans, campaigns and content
  • Seek external insight / research / best practice and new ideas and contribute to the development of communications practices and processes and continual improvement
  • Manage other communications tasks and projects as required.

Additional Information 

  • As part of this role you may be expected to participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota.
  • Post holder will be required to be part of the Corporate communication on call rota

Essential skills:

  • Good knowledge of internal communications and a clear understanding of what great campaigns looks like and can achieve
  • A good understanding of different communication disciplines - existing and emerging - and how they operate together
  • Creative thinker with ability to find creative solutions to communication challenges both in creative design and approach to campaigning
  • A good understanding of evaluation approaches and strong statistical analysis skills to interpret, present and make sound recommendations based on data and feedback
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to provide communications advice and guidance at a senior level and use skills and experience to influence strategies and plans
  • Ability to examine complex information and obtain further information to make and be able to explain unbiased and accurate decisions
  • Strong administrative and project management skills to deliver successful outcomes
  • Ability to prioritise workload to manage day to day tasks alongside spontaneous activity and continuous improvement projects, consistently delivering successful outcomes
  • An understanding of the Met’s operation, strategies, programmes and plans and a network of contacts and resources inside and outside the organisation to assist them in performing their role
  • A strong ethos of continual improvement and proven experience of using industry best practice in internal communications, existing and emerging, both generally and with particular regard to communication of change
  • Resilience and willingness to respond positively to the challenges of difficult or complex changes and tasks, encouraging others to do the same
