Salary: £37,744 to £42,631 plus a 15% Shift Disturbance Allowance and a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £37,744 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £42,631 will be via incremental progression.

As one of our Forensic Practitioners, you’ll work alongside other practitioners and senior colleagues. You’ll undertake the forensic examination of MPS scenes of crime, and preserve, record and recover forensic evidence effectively. In addition, we’ll look to you to provide specialist advice and guidance to MPS personnel regarding forensic issues to support the investigation of all categories of crime.

You’ll need to hold Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Stage 1 and 2 and have had a full clean manual driving licence for at least one year. You’ll also need to pass an internal driving assessment so that you can be authorised to drive police vehicles.

You will have a broad understanding of the full range of forensic services available to an investigation and will have carried out examinations across a wide range of crime scenes, including volume, serious and major crime. You should have the proven ability to lead on Major/Serious Crime Scene examinations until the arrival of senior colleagues and be experienced in the control of all aspects of crime scene examination and police related incidents.

You must also be able to undertake physical operational duties under a variety of circumstances, including manual handling and lifting. We’ll provide training for this in Emergency Life Saving Skills and Officer Safety Training. Additionally, you must pass a vetting procedure in line with the Metropolitan Police Vetting Policy, which involves providing DNA & Fingerprints for elimination purposes which will be held on relevant databases throughout your employment.

Lastly, you should be happy to join a busy shift team on early, late and night shifts including weekends and bank holidays. In return, we’ll offer you a shift disturbance allowance, and weekend working enhancement.

Role Description

Undertake the forensic examination of MPS scenes of crime, to preserve, record and recover forensic evidence effectively.

To provide specialist advice and guidance to MPS personnel regarding forensic issues to support the investigation of all categories of crime.

Key Activities

  • Start the forensic investigation process for crime related incidents
  • Attend and control the forensic process requiring forensic examination for crime related incidents
  • Create a photographic record relating for crime related incidents
  • Undertake forensic examinations at for crime related incidents
  • Participate fully in shift working in support of 24/7 cover to the MPS
  • Package, store and transport items of potential evidence ensuring continuity
  • Evaluate the forensic investigation of crime scenes or associated elements of the investigation
  • Prepare and present evidence for use in the criminal justice process, assisting all partners in understanding the value of the forensic evidence and attending court hearings as requested
  • To work within the Directorate’s Quality Management System and actively participate in the continuous improvement of the system by engaging in audits, competence tests, reporting non-conformances, etc and suggesting changes to improve the system.

Additional Information

We will be looking for successful candidates to commence training in the summer / autumn of 2023 and this recruitment campaign aims to address both current vacancies and future vacancies that may arise over the next 18 months

Due to the nature of the work, there will be a mandatory requirement to participate in the Met Occupational Health Screening process. This will include but is not limited to, audiometry, lung function testing and psychological assessment questionnaires.

Essential Criteria:

  • A broad and fundamental understanding of the full range of forensic services available to an investigation and will have carried out examinations across a wide range of crime scenes, including volume, serious & major crime, being able to demonstrate competency across all.
  • Attend all levels of crime scenes, including the proven ability to lead on Major/Serious Crime Scene examinations until the arrival of senior colleagues. 
  • Experienced in the control of all aspects of crime scene examination and police related incidents, including H&S in a forensic environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to handle stressful situations and prioritising tasks according to risk.
  • Experience of working with the public, across a wide range of diverse communities, and being able to demonstrate a high level of customer service.
  • Proven experience of working without supervision and being methodical and thorough in all activities, along with working effectively as part of a team.
  • Compliance to work within the Directorate’s Quality Management System required to achieve and maintain ISO 17020 accreditation standards. To actively participate in the continuous improvement of the system, by successfully engaging in audits, training and testing for accreditation purposes, falling within the Codes of Practice & Conduct of the Forensic Science Regulator.
  • Required to wear a police staff uniform/personal protective equipment, as appropriate to the operational nature of the role.
  • Must be able to undertake physical operational duties under a variety of circumstances – including manual handling & lifting.
  • The ability to cope with traumatic and disturbing crime scenes and police related incidents. Participation in a yearly psychological screening program is essential.
  • The ability to communicate findings to police colleagues and the Criminal Justice system, in the form of written statements and orally in judicial proceedings.
  • Must pass a traditional vetting procedure in line with the Metropolitan Police Vetting Policy and maintain this standard, along with required medical checks. Adhere to the Metropolitan Police Code of Conduct.
  • DNA & Fingerprints must be provided for elimination purposes, and to be held on relevant databases throughout employment within the Metropolitan Police.
  • To comply with and promote The Metropolitan Police Services policies on diversity and inclusion, both in the delivery of services and treatment of others.
  • To undertake all mandatory training requirements required to perform this role (Emergency Life Saving Skills / Officer Safety Training).

Professional Qualifications:

The following qualifications/skills are essential to the role and proof will be required:

  • College of Policing Crime Scene Investigation Training (Level 1)
  • College of Policing Crime Scene Investigation Training (Level 2)
  • (Or recognised equivalent with evidence of competence in this field).

Desirable Criteria:

  • Crime Scene Managers Course (College of Policing or recognised equivalent).
  • Photographic qualification and digital imaging.
  • Experience of working in a large and diverse organisation.
  • Experience of working within an ISO accreditation environment/organisation.
