Job Title: Digital Forensic Specialist (Capability Development)

Location: Lambeth

Salary: £40,657 to £44,585 plus £2,623 location allowance. You will receive £40,657 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £44,585 will be via incremental progression.

CD has recently undertaken projects in the areas of Smart TVs, Drones, Automotive Electronics, Kiosk Validation and on various IoT devices.

DCC are recruiting a Digital Forensic Specialist in the Capability Development team of the Central Laboratory. You will have a varied and complex role working on projects that are either strategic R&D projects or which are based on casework. The overarching objective of CD is to create new Digital Forensic Capability and deliver it into DCC at the most appropriate level; hence the projects undertaken by the team are novel, requiring research and the development of new examination methodologies.

Key Responsibilities -

  • Research and development of novel methods for the extraction and analysis of data from digital electronic devices
  • Manage & undertake projects in line with the department’s internal project management system
  • Forensic Analysis of digital devices (examination, production of evidential reports and evidential statements) and providing expert witness testimony at court as required
  • Reverse engineering data structures and parsing raw binary data from digital electronic device memories
  • Software tool development (computer programming)
  • Research into new technologies and writing technical reports thereon
  • Method Validation and Verification Studies
  • Comply with all health and safety obligations
  • Work within the Directorate’s Quality Management System and actively participate in its continuous improvement by engaging in audits, competence tests, reporting non-conformances, etc and suggesting improvements

Essential Criteria

  • A very creative mind, with strong problem solving ability and analytical skills.
  • Relevant degree in Science or Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of developing novel solutions for accessing and extracting data from digital devices such as Chip off, Direct eMMC, JTAG, UART, Software Exploits, Bus Sniffing Network exploits etc.
  • Experience of reverse engineering (e.g. with any of the following: disasemblers,  decompilers, hex editing tools)
  • Programmimg experience in at least one language (e.g. Python, C, C++, C#, Visual Basic)
  • Working knowledge of relevant legal issues (CPIA, PACE, Human Rights Act)
  • Work individually and within a team to meet organisational objectives
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Confirmation that you will provide fingerprint and DNA elimination samples for the Forensic Services’ Embargo database if successful in your application

 

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in the use of forensic software (e.g. XRY, Cellebrite, EnCase, Axiom)
  • Experience of ‘Chip-removal’ as a means to extract memory data
  • Knowledge of Structured Query Language databases
  • Experience of data and file systems at the byte-level
  • Proficient in the use of Linux operating systems
  • Ability to create and use Virtual Machines
  • Full driving licence
  • Court experience
