Help bring our history to life

At our Heritage Centre, you can step back in time – right back to 1829, when the Met Police first started. Our collection of historic artefacts charts our growth and draws all kinds of visitors. You’ll help people explore our past and learn our amazing story.

This is a unique opportunity to work with the Met’s incredible history. Every day, you’ll be welcoming visitors including schools, colleagues and members of the public. As well as giving tours, you’ll answer questions, including those from TV and film researchers. There’ll also be genealogical enquiries and loans of artefacts to organise.

The Centre’s collection includes uniforms, equipment and written and photographic material that traces the development of modern policing. There’s also high resolution vintage imagery, which you’ll help people access. With responsibility for managing volunteers and the safe storage of artefacts, you’ll be instrumental in the Centre’s daily management.

To join us, you’ll need practical experience of working in a museum. You should know about the conservation of exhibits and management of archives. A degree (or equivalent) in Fine Art, History or another relevant subject would be ideal. However, it’s more important that you can deal professionally with the public, from VIPs to children. IT-literate, well organised and a natural multi-tasker, you’ll have a real passion for history – and feel inspired to share it.

Applications must be submitted by 23:55pm on Thursday 1st March 2018

Failure to supply all the relevant documents will result in your application being terminated.

We view diversity as fundamental to our success. To tackle today’s complex policing challenges, we need a workforce made up from all of London’s communities. Applications from across the community are therefore essential.
