Job Title: Infrastructure Manager

Salary: The starting salary is £58,310 which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

The salary is broken down as £55,469 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £60,507 Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

The Technology, Research and Innovation (TRI) team keeps the Met at the cutting-edge of tech. Our work is highly innovative and no two projects are ever the same.

This staff role is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced infrastructure manager with hands-on IT experience who wants to lead a team of IT engineers in creating and supporting a range of infrastructure solutions. You will be working in an exciting and fast-paced research and development environment, delivering operational technology solutions to make London safer.

You will be part of the team who develop niche technology solutions for unique business issues for operational policing use, both in the office and in the field. You will use all of your technology skills and experience to effectively steer and manage the team, as well as providing technical authority and expertise.

Working closely with an enthusiastic and diverse team of infrastructure engineers, you will be responsible for architectural oversight, ensuring the security and stability of live, operational systems whilst acting as an authority on various technology matters, as well as being in a position to explore opportunities to enhance the technology infrastructure as managed by your team.

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) level before taking up the post; with a willingness to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) once in post, if required.

Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) OR Developed Vetting (DV) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.

What you will be doing

The Technology, Research & Innovation team creates niche technology solutions for specialist areas of the Met. Delivery of these solutions involves the complete lifecycle from developing requirements and working closely with the relevant stakeholders, producing solution designs, and creating fully functional products or systems for operational use in the office or the field.

You will manage a part of this innovative and enthusiastic team, tasked with designing and deploying a range of different IT technology solutions. Your work will include liaising with internal customers and external suppliers to both support the other TRI development teams and deliver systems required by a variety of other MPS units.

You will be responsible for providing architectural oversight, ensuring the security and stability of live, operational systems whilst acting as an authority on various technology matters, being in a position to explore opportunities to enhance the technology infrastructure as managed by your team.

Along with your technical background, you will provide line management, leadership, and technical mentoring and assistance to your team. Within the team, you will be expected to conduct meetings, schedule workloads and adopt and contribute to the department’s development process and methodology.

What you will bring along

The following are essential for this role:


  • HNC, HND or a degree in an IT, Engineering or a Science related discipline
  • Experience in managing and leading a team of IT engineers
  • Managing tasks, adhering to a process or methodology

You will need experience in at least one of the following areas

  • Physical or virtual infrastructure management (e.g. VMware or Hyper-V)
  • Managing, designing, deploying, and maintaining cloud and/or DevOps infrastructure (e.g. Azure or AWS)
  • Designing and implementing network systems architecture
  • System and network security
  • IT support/service desk management

  • Broad knowledge of Microsoft or Linux server operating systems
  • Server and storage technologies
  • Database design and management
  • Wired or wireless enterprise network technologies
  • Mobile device application and management
  • Experience of product evaluation and selection


You will be required to undertake security clearance to SC level in order to perform this role.
