The MPS Crime Cyber Crime Unit are looking for a DC within their Technical Team.

Cybercrime presents a unique challenge – it is rapidly evolving from advancements in technology and therefore presents an ever-changing landscape in how to successfully investigate it. Businesses and individuals are significantly impacted by this crime type and as such we strive to bring those offenders to justice and safeguard the public – disrupting organised criminal networks whilst offering victim’s cyber protect advice to prevent crime. The Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit (MPCCU) focuses on the most serious offences of cyber dependent crime, including the development, distribution, use or control of malicious software (malware), ransomware, network intrusion, website defacement, denial of service attacks, the online trade in financial, personal and other data, the provision of services and tools to facilitate cyber-dependent crime, and other Computer Misuse Act (CMA) related offending.

The unit has both force and regional responsibilities for cyber dependent crime and aligns to the National Cyber Security Strategy and The Met Direction.

The Technical Team work with the Pursue investigation teams in conducting investigations into the most serious incidents of network based organised criminal activity; detecting hi-tech crime; gathering and distributing relevant and quality intelligence; and producing evidence in a form which is admissible in Court. The role will see you working on sensitive and high profile enquiries that span national and international boundaries.

The Technical Team deal not only with digital forensics, but are at the forefront of new cyber tools, techniques, as well as cryptocurrency seizures.

The MPCCU has a Pan London responsibility. Post holders will be expected to have a flexible approach to working unsociable hours at short notice and potentially be willing to travel within the UK or Internationally dependent on operational requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • To carry out forensic examinations of computers and mobile devices.  Where applicable forensically secure and retrieve relevant data from those devices, in accordance with national guidelines.  To be carried out by utilising proprietary and bespoke forensic hardware and software.
  • To examine processed data in accordance with criteria set by investigators and produce the relevant evidence in a form, which can be readily understood and evaluated by third parties and/or independent experts or authorised persons.
  • To provide technical solutions to investigative teams and formulate digital forensic strategies in support of operations.
  • Prepare reports and statements of evidence in respect of completed cases. Attend court as a witness when necessary.
  • To develop and maintain specialised and up to date technical knowledge of both general and forensic computer procedures, keeping abreast of developments within the computer industry in order to secure the success of future investigations.
  • Conduct other associated tasks that are considered appropriate given the rapid changes in technology and embrace any new working practices which are introduced to deal with those changes.
  • To convey technical matters to a non-technical audience and ensure their understanding of the subject matter.
  • To attend scenes and capture live forensics to assist the investigation, and further, assist in the search process and any subsequent interviews, giving guidance and support on technical intelligence / evidence seized.

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrates a Knowledge of Cryptocurrency investigations and seizures.
  • A combination of academic or industry recognised qualifications, and experience related to the specialist field of computer forensics and mobile forensics.
  • The candidate will be expected to have a solid foundation of technical experience and expertise.
  • Possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and produce evidence in a form which is admissible in court.
  • Ability to convey technical matters to a non-technical audience

Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge of forensic based computer/mobile examination software packages such as Guidance Software EnCase, X-ways, Magnet AXIOM, Cellebrite and Oxygen.
  • Knowledge of Advance Extraction of mobile devices.
  • Experience of incident response to Malware attacks
  • OSCP or equivalent Certification
  • Knowledge of the legislation regarding Computer Misuse Act, serious organised crime/e-crime
  • Holds a current UK driving licence and the ability to drive MPS vehicles or a willingness to obtain MPS driver training.
  • Experience of forensic laboratory practices and procedures, evidence handling and court presentation.
