This is an exciting time to be working as a Vetting trainer within Referencing and Vetting for the Metropolitan Police Service. In addition to large-scale transformation, there's the unique and ever-evolving challenge of policing London. This means that as a Trainer, there are more opportunities for you to get involved with making London the safest global city in a time of unprecedented change within the UK's largest Police Service.

The role is essential in developing new and existing staff into Referencing and Vetting (R&V), Vetting Unit as well as providing ongoing training/developmental support across the R&V units, CEC, PNCb and OVRO.

At a summary level, the main aspects to this role are:

Ø  Leading the Training Needs Analysis for R&V, and with Senior Leadership Team (SLT) support setting the department training plan.

Ø  Designing and delivery of training as required by the business needs of the department.

Ø  Implementing the teaching/training cycle from initial assessment, planning and delivery through to conducting formative assessment and giving feedback.

Ø  Delivering mentoring on Academy, supporting various developmental pathways, for new and existing staff.

 

Knowledge

  • A good understanding of the working process and needs of the Vettign Unit.
  • Computer literacy (Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook & Word to an intermediate level).
  • A good practical knowledge of a range of tools and techniques within Continuous Improvement and their application in a Service Operation.
  • Have experience of delivering training to MPS agreed standards or a willingness to undertake training to achieve this level.
  • A good understanding, and ability to articulate the strategic aims of R&V.
  • Understanding how to undertake a training needs analysis or a willingness to learn.

Having an ability to enable team members to perform to a high standard. An ability to translate complex concepts and processes to meaningful knowledge for trainees.   • Must be trained or currently undergoing training to Vetting Officer levels in order to meet the minimum standards required for the role.

  • Holds or are willing to undertake courses to achieve one of the following qualifications:
  • Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) level 3
  • Current registered member of the Institute for Learning at least to Associate level.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Learning and Development
  • NVQ Level 4 in Learning and Development
  • Certificate in Education
  • TAP Diploma
  • JEB (Joint Examination Board) Qualification
  • City & Guilds Further and Adult Education Teacher’s Certificate Level 3/4 (7306 and 7307)
  • Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PCGE)
  • Bachelors Degree of Education (Secondary)
  • A First Degree in Training
  • OCR Teacher & Trainer Certificate (IT)
  • OCR Teacher & Trainer Diploma (IT)
  • Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Certificate in Learning & Development Practice Level 3

Key Result Areas

 

  • Training Needs Analysis: Be a key participant in an annual Training Needs Analysis and quarterly reviews of the analysis. Creating an annual training plan and calendar to ensure that training is delivered to meet departmental needs as well as local and corporate strategic objectives.
  • New Starter Foundation Training: Delivering new starter training. Supporting, leading and enabling new staff to develop their skills to reach the required level of competence. Developing the skills of individual staff by empowering, coaching, mentoring and holding regular 1-2-1 meetings.
  • Ongoing Job Specific Training: Preparing for and carrying out training for existing members of staff, where an identified training need or new policy has been identified. Ensuring that the course is suitable for the audience and reporting back outcomes to the individual’s line managers and SLT. Adjusting the training based on feedback received.
  • Creating Soft Skills Training: Creating training material and lesson plans for ‘soft skills’ where a training requirement has been identified, examples of training required may include, training in the use of MS office products, training in leadership and training to following MPS procedures or to use MPS tools.
  • Delivering ‘Soft Skills’ Training: Ensuring that the courses are suitable for the audience and reporting back outcomes to the individual’s line manager. Adjusting the training based on feedback received.
  • Performance Management: Actively managing the performance of the training unit within the wider department where necessary. Ensuring that training has resulted in the desired outcomes. Continuously improving approach to training.
  • Achieving Quality Outcomes: Being a member of a quality review group. Providing expert insight to ensure the group understands training requirements and capacity. Actively partaking in the group to ensure that the quality of case production within the unit meets or exceeds customer specification.
  • Continuous Improvement: Using visual management techniques to support team activities and problem solving. Contributing to daily reviews of team performance in collaboration with other team members. Manage risk and agree countermeasures in relation to key metrics - delivery, quality, people and cost. Participate in all phases of improvement events including preparation, design, and implementation, embed and sustain changes to realise benefits. Contribute to wider Referencing and Vetting Departmental-wide improvement projects.
