Detective Sergeant, Domestic Abuse Tactical and Policy Advisor
The Continuous Policing Improvement Command Tactical and Policy Advisors (TPA’s) are responsible for driving improvement to prevent crime, reduce harm, build confidence and create demand reduction by enhancing MPS service delivery and mitigating risk.
CPIC sits within the Professionalism portfolio. This role is as a DS TPA on the Domestic Abuse team within CPIC.
Work Involves: Creating, reviewing and maintaining MPS policy for Domestic Abuse; providing advice to a range of internal stakeholders; improving MPS service delivery in relation to DA, considering national/international best practice and academic research.
You will be responsible for:
- Attending HM Coroner inquests, responding to external stakeholder requests; MOPAC, London Assembly members, MP’s, press/media, FOIA, Domestic Homicide reviews, HMIC, IPCC, DPS OL, National NPCC leads, provide briefing notes for senior MPS officers
- Service Delivery – responsible for improving MPS service delivery in all of the areas outlined above; includes looking nationally/internationally for best practice; liaising with law enforcement and criminal justice agencies visiting the UK; liaising with the College of Policing (for all of the areas outlined above)
- Meetings – attend MOPAC VAWG co-ordinators, MOPAC VAWG Board (Dep Mayor chair), LCJB DA Meeting, arrange and attend DA Strategic Group (Lead Responsible Officer chair), including sub working groups for – Initial Investigations, Technology, Recommendations, Offenders, Criminal Justice, Training, Communications. Attend the National DA meetings (DCC Chair) London Safeguarding Adults Network, Forced Marriage Unit meeting
- HMIC/CJJI – support force inspections and respond to recommendations
- NPCC – support the MPS and National NPCC leads for the areas outlined above
- Line Management of a small team of DCs
Please note whilst we are looking for applicants with Domestic Abuse investigative experience. Successful applicants would be expected to have an interest in Safeguarding in general and may be required to work across the command within another Safeguarding area at the discretion of the Director of CPIC.

Essential For The Role
Essential Criteria
The jobholder will be experienced in domestic abuse investigations and be able scrutinise relevant MPS indices/policies and produce written reports via the use of Word, PowerPoint, Excel. Knowledge and have experience of traditional BCU investigations/indices. (CAD, CRIS, CRIMINT, MERLIN etc). The ability to work independently and show flexibility when dealing with stakeholders and work demands.
The jobholder must be confident dealing with senior peers’ multiple rank mixes and presentations to numerous stakeholders. This will include managing stakeholder expectations, regular contact with various senior ranks, national charities and civil staff in order to interview, discuss and advise. Meetings and contact will take various forms (telephone, face to face, email, group meetings, workshops, presentations).
The jobholder will be required to advise on MPS policy issues and concerns. This advice can influence operational and strategic processes and decisions alongside legal considerations. Aspects of the role may require strict deadlines and the need to determine performance measures to address MPS change and risk areas.
The jobholder should have an understanding of Continuous Improvement methodology.
