Role:

As a specialist within the Computer Aided Modelling Bureau (CAMB) the role holder will undertake measured surveys of crime scenes and other sites and reproduce in CAD format for issue to commands within the Metropolitan Police Service and subsequently the Crown Prosecution Service. This includes receiving and confirming instructions from police officers, staff and other stakeholders, and combining surveying experience with technical building knowledge for the production of CAD drawings. The CAD data and drawings produced are used to assist in investigations, present technical information in court, support contingency planning and event management, and to help manage the MPS property estate. The role holder will be responsible for making best use of current surveying and CAD technology, and for complying with best practice and procedures. The role holder will be required to view scenes, images and material of a disturbing nature, and may be required to appear in court. They must also be willing to provide out of hours support and prepared to participate in an on-call rota if required, and will need to pass ‘SC’ vetting prior to appointment due to the sensitivity and often high profile nature of the work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work as a member of the Computer Aided Modelling Bureau, producing digital information in support of police investigations, operations and the MPS property estate.
  • Comply with deployment protocols, risk assessments, Health & Safety requirements. Undertake all required training and comply with all policies and procedures. Promote a positive health, safety and wellbeing culture and raise any health and safety concerns.
  • Visit scenes of crime and other sites when required, within and occasionally outside the MPS estate, to carry out measured surveys as necessary utilising modern survey technologies.
  • Produce digital CAD plan drawings, elevations and sections from as-built survey information (predominantly point cloud data) with sufficient content, level of detail/realism and dimensional accuracy to ensure they are fit for purpose and provide best value.
  • Support investigation teams, forensic specialists and other experts understand, incorporate and present complex forensic and other evidence within a spatial context. This can include providing dimensional information and/or mapping the location of exhibits, showing lines of sight or the position of physical evidence etc.
  • Ensure stringent procedures are maintained for the capture and analysis of field data and all resultant evidential material is suitable for court room submission.
  • Prepare written statements and attend court as an expert in your field in support of any work carried out and consequential information produced or opinion given.
  • Assist in the planning stages of operations by obtaining and developing relevant data such as building layouts, maps, photography etc.
  • Manage multiple plan drawing projects from initial request stage through to court issue, ensuring that all deadlines are met.
  • Explore and utilise new technologies and develop innovative solutions to support front line policing.
  • Maintain and develop procedures to ensure accurate records of all projects are retained for legal and evidential purposes. Complying with the ‘Data Protection Act’.
  • Ensure all our procedures are continuously updated to conform to current legislation (including ‘Data Protection Act’, ‘Criminal Investigation and Procedures Act’ and ‘Human Rights Act’).
  • Provide advice to Police Officers on the best use of plan drawing techniques and attend case conferences when required to advise the Crown Prosecution Service on relevant technical matters.
  • Maintain equipment and IT applications and apply approved software and firmware updates as and when required.
  • Maintain good personal and digital security awareness. Comply with all security processes and procedures (including all physical, data and cyber security requirements).

Essential Criteria:

  • Should hold an appropriate qualification in a surveying/geomatics, engineering, architectural, CAD or other property related discipline.
  • Competent in the use of CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Rhinoceros 3D etc.) to produce plan, section and elevation detail, including topographic drawings (site plans) and measured building layouts (floor plans) and the ability to use external (‘x’) referenced files/data (such as drawings, mapping and point cloud).
  • An in-depth knowledge of AutoCAD and a general understanding of survey/geomatic technologies including photogrammetry and laser scanning methods. A good knowledge of the built environment and Health & Safety issues are essential.
  • A background in the built environment with an understanding of survey principles and practical experience, including the production of CAD drawings/models from measured surveys and as-built information.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the confidence to give evidence at court.
  • Computer skills are essential with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Adobe.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence and the confidence to drive work vehicles in central London.
