Reports to - Mounted Branch Training Inspector

Role & Responsibilities.

  • Ensure all Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) horses are correctly fitted with a saddle and head kit to perform operational police duties.
  • Consistently monitor the fit of saddles identifying any issues and be able to rectify, adjust and re-fit.
  • Identify and explain irregularities in horse conformation and or asymmetry in horse/rider that may affect the fit of the saddle. Help to find solutions to overcome these issues.
  • Work within the remit of your responsibility. Liaise and work with allied professionals including veterinary practitioners, farriers and physiotherapists.
  • Be able to make bridles, design and alter bespoke saddlery items.
  • Fit all types of bridle correctly including snaffle, double and uniform bridle used by the MPS.
  • Repair all types of horse equipment including saddles, bridles and rugs.
  • Minor repairs to riding boots where practical.
  • Maintain a basic saddler’s tool kit.
  • Maintain electronic records on each MPS horse using Horse Power App.
  • Deal with wholesale suppliers to maintain and order stock ensuring best value for money and working within MPS budget
  • Understands the mechanics of each bit type and correctly fit them.
  • Drive and visit the other MPS stables when required.
  • Educate officers on basic saddle and bridle fitting.

  • A high level of equestrian experience.

Application process.

Applicants are required to provide their personal statement outlining their background and experience with a referee that can qualify the information. The statement must be no more than two side of A4 in Arial font 10.

Following a paper sift, successful applicants will be invited to attend an assessment day at MTE in Thames Ditton, Surrey which will include a saddle fitting exercise, making a component part of a head kit and an interview. This will take place in April 2024
