Your next step in policing

Our Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) route is now open and we’re recruiting constables. Who better to apply than our own Volunteer Police Cadets? An exciting opportunity for those looking to develop their skills in a different policing role.

Working in the Met you’ll already have a passion and commitment to policing and providing a great service to the public. London is where we work, and some of us live, and we all feel the desire to do what we can to make our city even safer to visit, live and work in.

About the Role

As a police constable in the Met, you get the chance to keep your city safe and make the capital a better place. Every day. It’s an immensely rewarding job that will put you at the heart of the communities that make London the city we all love. As a PC, you’ll have the opportunity to make a positive difference to the lives of Londoners every day; from building relationships with local communities, reducing crime, supporting victims and keeping people safe. You’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that what you do will make a real difference to the lives of all those around you.

About You

It’s vital the Met Police reflects this vibrant, unique and ever-evolving capital. Which is why we’re looking for candidates from all backgrounds to join us. You’ll need the ability to earn trust and respect, and build positive relationships with all kinds of individuals.

To make London the safest city in the world, you also have to understand it.

What does the recruitment process involve?

Having attended regular careers evenings and had regular conversations with your coordinator about your career progression and PC opportunities, your VPC coordinator will need to endorse your application to become a PC before you submit it. If your application is not endorsed you can apply via our external route.

Once you have received the required endorsement, you will be provided with a bespoke link which will allow you apply and track your application.

PCDA eligibility

In addition to the standard PC eligibility criteria, you must meet or exceed the following academic criteria, which applies for all candidates wishing to undertake the PCDA route:

You must hold a level 2 qualification in English Language at a GCSE grade C or above, or grades 4-9. If you do not have this qualification, we will also consider an English Language equivalent overseas qualification.

You must also hold, or be working towards, one of the following;

  • 64 UCAS points within the meaning of section 3 of the Education and Skills Act 2008 (visit UCAS tariff calculator)
  • An academic or vocational qualification gained outside England and Wales which is considered by the UK National Recognition Information Centre to be equivalent to 64 UCAS points

Our VPC recruits who are anticipating A-Level (or equivalent) grades may continue through the recruitment process, however they are unable to take up post until they have successfully met the UCAS point requirement, as per apprenticeship regulations.

Once your eligibility is confirmed, you will be sent materials to prepare for the online assessment centre stage of the process. Here you’ll complete a number of exercises set in a policing context which will provide assessors with opportunities to evaluate you against our competencies and values framework, and it will provide you with further insight into the role of a police constable. Upon passing this stage, we will invite you to attend ‘Day Two’ that consists of role-play exercises as well as a health assessment. The health assessment includes a medical appointment; a fitness test; DNA samples; finger prints; a substance misuse test; and to submit your vetting form (if required).

What’s next?

Once your pre-employment checks are complete, and you've completed your notice period with your current employer (as applicable), you’ll become a police constable! From there, you’ll start your operational and classroom led apprenticeship training.

Pay

You’ll start with a salary package of circa £30k inclusive of allowances.
