Job Title: Horse Trainers Assistant

Salary: £24,624 to £26,539 plus £984 location allowance. You will receive £24,624 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £26,539 will be via incremental progression.

Purpose and objectives:

To assist in the training of young / unbroken, horses for police duty, so that they will be obedient, well-mannered and responsive in all the situations to which they are likely to be deployed. To be responsible for the daily care and exercise of a permanent escort horse and to seek personal development with the potential of taking on a young horse to train under the guidance of a horse trainer.

Job activities:

Assists horse trainers to perform all training tasks requiring more than one person, such as backing horses or introducing horses to boxes, forge, clipping etc.

In the absence of a trainer, undertakes the exercising of that officer’s remounts, liaising beforehand with the trainer so as to be fully aware of the remount’s training needs and other relevant information. In this capacity, the post holder will at various times, be required to perform every type of horse / training duties, including stable management, clipping, handling, long-reining, groundwork, school work, road work and nuisance training under supervision

When remounts are introduced to road work, rides an experienced escort horse alongside. In this role, anticipates things that are likely to challenge the remount and forestalls them or is prepared to help the trainer control the remount. Slows vehicular traffic as necessary, and gives appropriate hand signals on behalf of both self and trainer

Permanently responsible for at least one escort horse, mucking out, grooming and watering it, and setting fair its box or stall. Performs these duties also in respect of temporarily allocated remounts

Ensures that allocated horses receive adequate daily exercise, either through escort work or otherwise

In conjunction with other staff, maintains the cleanliness of remount stable yard on a regular basis. Cleans riding kit and equipment

Performs late turn and weekend duty on a regular basis when the post holder, with one other member of the training establishment staff, is responsible for the welfare of all horses in the establishment, and for general security

Desirable Criteria:
