Job Title: Communications Exploitation Engineer - Technical Officer Commex

Salary: £40,657 to £44,585 plus a £2,623 Location Allowance

Location: Lambeth

The role involves working in a small, dedicated team of specialist engineers developing, customising and deploying covert technical surveillance assets in support of MPS MO3 operations. The role requires a practical and flexible approach and attitude as well as a willingness to take part in an on-call Rota to provide 24/7 support. You will also be required on occasion to work protracted hours in challenging situations, in pursuance of providing electronic and communications technical surveillance supporting MPS covert policing activities. Working as part of a team supporting covert policing, often for protracted periods on a 24/7 basis, potentially anywhere in the UK using your skills, knowledge and experience. This is an opportunity to use your specialist skills and initiative to ensure the success of some of the MPS's most serious operations.

Key Responsibilities

Your core duties will include:

  • Deploying on MO3 operations as dictated by operational demands
  • Resolving problems and technical issues as they arise
  • Working in a supportive, positive manner within an established team in demanding environments
  • Maintaining highly accurate records, recording activity and report writing
  • Ensuring technical safety standards are maintained
  • Additional Information
  • You will be required to work under pressure at unsociable hours, occasionally away from home, providing a critical service to covert policing.
  • Owing to the sensitive nature of the work, discretion is essential.
  • You will be required to take part in a 24-hour on-call system to support MO3 operations at short notice.

Additionally, the following skills/requirements are required

  • Understanding of transmission systems including frequency spectrum, modulation methods, antennas, IP radio, mobile phone networks (2G, 3G, 4G), BT services, optical fibre
  • Knowledge of GPS
  • Knowledge of Electrical and Electronic principles
  • Understanding of IP principles and networking
  • Good interpersonal skills and a strong team player
  • Flexibility and resilience to changing working environments
  • Ability to work protracted hours in demanding environments occasionally away from home
  • IT literate with a willingness to learn and understand bespoke platforms
  • Possess good analytical skills
  • Good standard of general education with the ability to write comprehensive reports to a high standard
  • Tenacious approach
  • Work within a stringent safety and legislative regime and take responsibility for ensuring compliance
  • Be willing to undertake residential training.

Essential Criteria

  • Must be qualified to degree/HND/HNC level or be able to demonstrate exceptional relevant experience
  • Hold a valid UK driving licence
  • Comprehensive understanding of RF communication systems with a particular knowledge of Wi-Fi systems
  • You must have a sound operational experience of deploying covert methodology and an extensive knowledge and understanding of at least six of the following areas, and a good understanding of the others:
  • PEN Testing/Ethical hacking
  • Cyber attacks
  • Malware analysis
  • Software development & scripting
  • Cryptography
  • System vulnerability research
  • Anonymising technologies
  • Mobile security
  • Systems administration
  • Network engineering
  • Equipment interference
  • RF communication systems
