Job Title: Deputy Head of Insight Team

Salary: £81,635 plus a London Location Allowance of Zone 1 - £2,623 and a supplementary allowance of £5,742.

This job role will lead on research and analysis for the Unit. That means the successful candidate will be responsible for all primary research (e.g. econometric analysis of MPS data as well as the methodological design of in the field impact assessments, like randomised controlled trials) as well as secondary research (e.g. from the Applied Criminology literature).

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

 

  • Extensive experience of working with Police and crime data, including matching it with external data sets

  • Nationally / internationally recognised expertise (i.e. a track record of publications in well regarded journals) in quantitative research (in particular, applying advanced econometric methods of analysis to Policing data)

  • Extensive experience of leading primary research within a major Police force, with a focus on the application of experimental and quasi-experimental methodologies to operational policing. Drawing on robust, empirical research in applied criminology and evidence based policing

  • Advanced statistical tools of analysis to exploit greater value from data.

  • Experience in leading change, with evidence of robust, empirical research in applied criminology and evidence based policing

  • Evidence of use of artificial intelligence in order to forecast risks of harm and partnering links with universities who are investing in this technology

  • Uses advanced statistical tools of analysis to exploit greater value from crime data

  • Recognised leader in Evidence Based Policing

  • Experience of working with MPS officers and staff

  • Experience in designing trials and prototypes to drive innovation

  • Excellent verbal and written skills of communication – the ability to distil very complicated concepts and findings into succinct language that can be understood by untrained and busy decision makers with many important issues competing for attention

  • Experience of managing and leading teams of researchers within Police agencies

  • Proven track record of presenting to senior decision makers within major Police forces

  • Extensive familiarity with market leading analytical software

  • Directly liaising with analytical teams, external partners, senior management, operational Police at all levels

  • Ability to work remotely from locations around the UK (predominantly in central London)

  • Experience of leading formal meetings to drive strategic decision making

  • Demonstrate flexibility concordant with the ‘Sprint project’ ethos

  • Preparedness to beyond core hours under exceptional circumstances if and when required

Key Result Areas:

 

  • Manage and lead teams of analysts and researchers to deliver analytical insight for Sprints every 8 weeks and frequent publications

  • Provide MPS with more robust approach to quantitative analysis

  • Deliver training and mentoring to develop direct reports and wider MPS analytical community

  • Match external data sets with Police and crime data where necessary with the ability to anonymise sensitive, personal data

  • Deliver experimental proposals for assessing operational impact and social outcomes of existing Police tactics and innovations

Responsibilities:

 

  • Line management of 3 staff

  • No budgetary responsibility

  • Expected to analyse hundreds of thousands if not millions of rows of data / month
