Job Title: Dog Training Instructor

Salary: £28,726 to £30,940 plus a £1,518 location allowance. You will receive a starting salary of £28,726. Progress to the band maximum of £30,940 will be via incremental progression.

We are welcoming applications from individuals who are interested in becoming Police Staff Dog Instructors part of the Dog Training Team based at Keston (BR2 6AR) for a fixed two year contract.

Candidates must have recent Police Dog Training experience and hold NPCC Instructor qualifications in either Explosive Detection or General Purpose Police Dog Training.

The successful candidate will be responsible for training and Police Dog and Handler Teams to accredited NPCC Standard, in General Purpose and / or Specialist Search Disciplines (Firearms, Cash, Drugs, Forensic Evidence, Digital Evidence Recovery, Explosive modules).

In addition the candidate will be expected to conduct independent licencing of Police Dog and Handler Teams, providing remedial training where required, writing of training reports, suspension of licences where standards not achieved and withdrawal of Police Dog / Handler Teams where appropriate.

The candidate may also be required to participate in MPS Puppy Development Scheme and supervise matings and / or whelpings in the Dog Breeding Programme to ensure sufficient business continuity and supply of dogs for future training.

The candidate should be an experienced NPCC accredited Dog Instructor and must have recent experience in Police Dog Training.

Candidates should note that they may be required to work in any area of Dog Training and Kennel Operations.

Candidates for this post should be aware that the nature of the role requires the candidate to display patience, problem solving, resilience, excellent communication skills. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will not only be able to recognise good practice but will also be required to identify training problems, write comprehensive written reports and instigate development plans for colleagues (dog and handler teams) who do not achieve the required standard. Candidates will be required to demonstrate that they can manage confrontation as part of the selection process.

The role requires the delivery of initial, continuation and 30 day remedial training over a period of weeks and as such candidates should be advised that there are limited opportunities in this specific role for flexible working opportunities.

The successful candidate will work 36x hours per week spread across 4x days which is usually as follows but may be varied owing to demand.

Week 1: Monday to Thursday

Week 2: Tuesday to Friday

Essential Criteria:

  • Candidates must be up-to-date with Emergency Life Support Training, or have equivalent First Aid Training. 
  • Candidates considering the role must hold one or both NPCC Police Dog Instructor Certificates in General Purpose or Explosive Detection Dogs. 
  • Candidates must hold a full UK driving licence, with C1, D1 and willing to undertake a driving course to allow them to drive police vehicles. 
  • The role is based at the Dog Training Establishment, Keston which is not near public transport links. Dog Training takes place both on and off-site, across the MPD and Home Counties and there is a requirement to travel to those venues.

 

Desirable Criteria: 

  • Whilst recent experience working and training dogs in a Policing environment is preferred, candidates who can evidence competency in the role with the requisite certificates may be considered even if the experience does not come directly from a Policing environment. 
  • Candidates who hold the PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Life-Long Sector) or Level 3 Award in Education and Training.  
  • Candidates with experience of mating, whelping, breeding or early stage puppy development.
