Special Constable (Volunteer Police Officer)

Invest your free time in making a real difference to our city

The Metropolitan Police Service are recruiting volunteers to join our Special Constable team.  Special Constables dedicate a minimum of 16 hours each month to volunteering alongside our regular police officers and police community support officers to play a vital role in our mission to make London safer.

Special constables wear the same uniform and hold the same powers as our regular officers.  Based at one of our 12 Basic Command Units (BCU) located across the 32 London boroughs, you will enjoy a variety of roles and carry out duties such as:

  • Responding to 999 calls
  • Foot and vehicle patrols
  • Tackling Anti-social behaviour
  • Road safety initiatives
  • House-to-house enquiries
  • Helping ensure public safety and security at both local and major events
  • Presenting evidence in court
  • Taking part in 'Hotspot' operations to tackle underage drinking, criminal damage and nuisance/public disorder
  • Offering crime prevention advice and promoting property marking initiatives

We’re looking for people from all backgrounds to join us, people who can earn trust, respect and build positive relationships with all Londoners and whom share our values.  In return you’ll receive the best training possible to prepare you for policing London.  In addition you are eligible for a range of benefits including: free travel (within London), discount on council tax (within Greater London) as well as a range of other Met friendly benefits and discounts.

This is a volunteering opportunity like no other, where you’ll get a tremendous amount of pride from dedicating your free time to giving back to the community.
