Enhanced Return Scheme

We are looking to recruit up to 300 police officers at constable, sergeant and inspector ranks. If you retired as a Constable, Sergeant or Inspector (uniform or detective) with 30 years’ service or you are aged 55 years and over with a minimum of 25 years’ service.

To assist the Met in the return of police officers with valuable skills and experience, we are offering an Enhanced Return Scheme for a time-limited period.

By the end of March 2022 the Met reached the highest number of police officers on record.  We are now in a record year of growth, seeking to recruit an additional 4,000 officers.  This will take the Met to 36,500 officers by March 2023 as part of the National Police Uplift Programme.  Our need for experienced officers is greater now than ever before.

The Enhanced Return Scheme

The return scheme is designed to assist the Met in the return of police offices with valuable skills and experience who would otherwise retire, or, who retired from the Met Service in the last five years.

The scheme allows a police officer to retire from the Met but to then return as an attested officer after a short break of service.  Our Enhanced Return Scheme allows an officer to take their full pension and monthly salary, this provision is in place until June 2025.

Eligibility

The Met would like to hear from Constables, Sergeants and Inspectors, who have retired from the Met within the last 5 years but have reached 30 years’ service; or, have at least 25 years’ service and are aged 55 years and over.

You must be in a position to commit to a minimum of 12 months to the Return Scheme.

Once we achieve 300 successful applications, the scheme will close.

The selection process

You will be invited to attend a values-based interview and appointments will be subject to full vetting, including UPP and reference checks from previous line and senior managers.
