Job Title: Technical Officer - AV Operations

Salary: £37,744 to £42,631 plus a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £37,744 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £42,631 will be via incremental progression.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Metropolitan Police as a Technical Officer forming part of a specialist team of engineers and officers within MO3 – Covert Policing, deploying and maintaining cutting-edge technologies to fight crime.

The Command supports all aspects of policing in London and beyond, providing specialist operational and technical services to front line policing, often in the most challenging but rewarding circumstances where your ideas and problem solving really can make a difference.

The Team - AV Ops

AV Ops Technical Officers provide Operational specialist support in the design, testing, development and deployment of electronic systems including but not exclusively Alarm Detection systems, CCTV, Video and Audio transmission systems, Digital Recording equipment, Radio equipment, Access Control and Asset management systems using GPS.

The Role

Your role will evolve as you develop the skills required and opportunities will be made for you to work with a number of technologies.

You will be based in Clapham where your background and knowledge within the topics previously mentioned will allow for you to provide technical support in customising and deploying technical assets in support of MPS MO3 operations pan London.  Reporting to your Band N Supervisor you will need to be flexible and able to adapt, plan ahead and manage workloads.  This is an opportunity to use your specialist skills and initiative to ensure the success of some of the MPS's most serious operations, you will receive the highest level of training in support of this.

On any given day you could be involved in supporting and the preparation, installation and commissioning of CCTV/Audio equipment to deliver on an operational objective.

With support from the team you may attend strategy meetings with Investigators where you will be expected to assist with the delivery of engineering solutions required to meet expectations and in strict compliance with MPS objectives and Surveillance Codes of Practice as set out by the Home Office, National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) and College of Policing.

You will be required to assist and develop new deployment techniques, horizon scan emerging technologies and concepts that could be utilised in advancement of Police tactics and capabilities.

 Additional Information:

You will be required to work under pressure and unsociable hours, occasionally away from home, providing a critical service to policing in London and beyond.  Owing to the sensitive nature of the work, discretion is essential.  In time you may be required to take part in a 24-hour on-call scheme as part of your role to support MO3 operations at short notice.  You will need a Full UK Driving licence and be expected on occasion to drive Police vehicles.

Essential for the role

The successful applicants will be working in an engineering position relevant to the role where they can demonstrate their ability to work independently and as a part of a team with good communications skills. Examples of practical management of engineering projects and carrying out system maintenance, fault finding and support are required including the use of initiative, flexibility and responsibility towards work. 

We are looking for enthusiastic, flexible and open-minded engineers. As a suitable candidate, you are familiar with approaching new problems from an analytical perspective and keen on exploring new ways of working. You are a determined person with a passion for understanding how things work and/or why they don’t. You are keen on working as part of a team and are able to express your thought process but have the drive and motivation to work independently. 

Ideally you will already be working in the Police, Military or Private Industry within the Security Installation sector and hold a Degree or the equivalent in Electronics, Electrical Engineering or similar vocational qualifications / experience.

You will need to demonstrate that you are aware of and understand Risk Management principles and Health & Safety legislation in the workplace. 

A depth of knowledge and understanding of I.P and Networking, Operating Systems, IT Hardware/ Software will be pivotal to this role.

A good understand of GPS and other forms of Asset tracking and management is desirable, you may be expected to explain how these technologies work, we will help you with the rest.

Desirable for the role

  • General understanding of building fabrication and regulations.
  • Fully qualified Electrician (Level 3/18th Edition)
  • Relevant Industry Qualifications or courses
  • Demonstrate general building knowledge and highlight any DIY projects undertaken.
  • D7 College of Policing Core skills
  • Understanding of Authorities in conjunction with Covert Surveillance Code of Practice
  • Knowledge of 3D modelling, Printing and mechanical Design and fabrication.
  • Membership of a Professional Institution
