Are you the right candidate to join our team?

With varied and interesting cases, life is busy and fast-paced for Paralegals at the Met. In this vital role, you’ll be at the heart of our respected in-house legal service, where you’ll have the chance to handle cases right from start to finish, many of which are high profile and generate media interest. If you thrive on challenges and can represent the Met in court, read on to discover a rewarding specialist role.

The Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) provides in-house legal services for the Met. Paralegals provide high level legal support to lawyers whilst also conducting their own cases. Our paralegals are case holders on a variety of cases such as Disclosure, or Domestic Violence Protection Orders. You’ll handle each one from start to finish, investigating, instructing Counsel, giving advice and making decisions. As the face of the Met at court, hearings and tribunals, you’ll do all you can to ensure cases are resolved fairly and professionally. Rest assured that you’ll have support and guidance from our expert Lawyers.

Our Paralegals also support the in-house lawyer teams in defending the Commissioner against a wide range of claims – everything from civil actions to employment tribunals. You’ll help to prepare cases and carry out investigations, conduct research, gather evidence, interview witnesses and attend conferences and hearings.

To join us, you’ll need an interest in the law. You will be representing the Met in court, so a familiarity with court procedures will help but is not a requirement. We’re also looking for applicants to have the ability to deal with people at all levels, using strong communication skills and it’s essential that you’re well organised and able to meet strict deadlines. If you can bring this expertise plus good analytical and investigatory skills, we can offer you a role with a high level of job satisfaction. In return you can expect a rewarding career in the country’s biggest in-house police team.

This permanent post is offered on a full-time basis however we are committed to creating an inclusive working environment so welcome and encourage applications from candidates who have a flexible working pattern, provided they meet the business needs of DLS in line with the Met’s Smarter Working policies.

DLS’ main offices are based in Holborn however staff will regularly travel to other locations and courts across London. DLS are moving to a pattern of blended working, subject to operational requirements.
