Description of Unit

Technology, Research and Innovation (TRI) are part of Operational Technology within the Met Operations 3 command and are responsible for keeping the MPS at the forefront of new and emerging technologies. This is achieved by undertaking research and development of innovative solutions for Operational and Corporate MPS customers, including Counter Terrorism. The work is highly innovative and may involve undertaking research activities with academia, exploring new off-the shelf technologies, taking commercially available products and modifying them or where a solution does not exist, creating it. This may be through development of bespoke IT hardware/software/electronic solutions or a combination of these. Delivery of these solutions involves the complete lifecycle from developing requirements with customers, producing design solutions and turning these designs into fully functional products or systems for operational use in the field. The Unit specialises in being able to rapidly deliver tailored technical solutions to meet immediate operational requirements.

Description of Team

The IT Systems Development team develops bespoke IT solutions to unique business issues relating to some of the more specialist and sensitive parts of the MPS/National policing network. Delivery of these solutions involves the complete lifecycle from developing requirements with customers, producing design solutions and turning these designs into fully functional products or systems for operational use in the field. Some of these systems require on-going support due to their specialist or short-term nature. Other systems will be required to be transitioned into corporate support. The IT department works closely with the Electronics Systems Development, Research and Explore departments of TRI as well as Digital Policing and other MPS technology departments.

Work Activities

The role holder shall be part of the ICT development team developing niche solutions to unique business issues relating to some of the more specialist and sensitive parts of the MPS/National Policing. The role is varied and will involve working effectively and efficiently on their own or as part of a larger project team. Daily activities will be varied but may include any of the following:

  • Fault finding and remediation for existing systems.
  • Ascertaining and documenting customer requirements.
  • Producing prototype code against documented requirements.
  • Testing modules against an agreed testing strategy.
  • Producing fully resilient code for inclusion into a production environment.
  • Working outdoors safely showing practical, hands-on abilities.

The post encompasses a programming aspect and applicants must be able to demonstrate experience in a programming language, preferable C# etc. Knowledge and experience of SQL is desirable. The development cycle must be undertaken within a secure and quality environment ensuring full configuration management is maintained at all times. The work may require elements of design, modelling, prototyping, code production and implementation test and acceptance

On occasions, third line support may be required to assist in complex fault analysis in the field alongside operational colleagues and officers.

Paid opportunities for on-call working in evenings and weekends are available in support of our live systems.
