Job Title: Firearms Enquiry Team – Administrator/ Researcher - MO19 Specialist Firearms Command

Salary: The starting salary is £34,808, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £31,880 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £34,108.  Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

This is an exciting time to be working as a Firearms Enquiry Team Administration Officer for the Metropolitan Police Service. The Firearms Enquiry Team is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective licensing of all legally held firearms, shotguns and explosives in London. As an Administration Officer, there are more opportunities for you to get involved with making London the safest global city in a time of unprecedented change within the UK's largest Police Service.

The role of an Administration Officer encompasses many strands within the business area of Firearms Licensing. The current vacancy is an administration function. The department however provides the scope for staff to be laterally developed into other Band E functions within the department including public facing roles.

The successful candidate will also be expected to complete training as a researcher to allow flexibility across the department based upon demand.

This position involves vetting and risk assessing members of the public who wish to possess firearms and explosives. It is critical in minimising risk to the public and the reputation of the Metropolitan Police. The researcher is responsible for assessing the suitability of applicants to
possess shotguns/firearms by researching various MPS databases. The role holder will have regular interaction with Firearms Enquiry Officers and other MPS departments. Demand is high - we process approximately 750 files a month, each requiring vetting. This role will fit into a small team dedicated to this work.

Key Responsibilities for Admin Staff

What does the average day look like? Your core duties will include:

  • The effective and expedient administration of matters relating to firearms licensing.
  • Successful applicants will be responsible for the initial processing of firearms applications - rejecting if necessary requirements are not met, dealing with email enquiries from members of the public regarding their shotgun / firearms / explosive licences, updating the National Firearms Licensing Management database, printing and posting licenses and filing of applications upon completion. The system is now digitalised and computer literacy is essential.
  • The successful applicants will support the sergeants in the management of risk posed by firearm/shotgun license holders. This may include identifying risk contained in GP letters.   • In-depth knowledge of IIP, CRIS, CONNECT, PNC and PND
    • Ability to complete Dynamic Risk assessments in relation to intel obtained via Police Indices
