Discover our world through data

London’s policing landscape is constantly changing, and so is the Met. The biggest police service in the UK, we must evolve to be at our best and to cope with changing trends in crime. Our reporting processes must also adapt so they give information of optimum quality, breadth and detail. As a Technical Engineer, you’ll tackle this challenge – and get an incredible insight into our organisation.

The Team

The Data Office has three functions:

  • Data Governance: Ensure that the end-to-end process of managing data from its identification and collection through to its eventual disposal is conducted in an efficient, compliant and secure manner. The division will create, disseminate and enforce a set of rules and consistent standards across data usage, quality, security and compliance, providing direction for the workforce with regard to data usage, which will enable the delivery of the Met’s data strategy in line with data laws.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Dedicated to developing better products to sit alongside and enhance self-service. Responsible for managing the flow of information requests and ensuring all reporting requirements are met. We monitor and ensure the delivery of all data requests, as well as ensuring that all Ad-Hoc and BAU reporting needs are addressed. The Reporting and Analytics team are responsible for developing the current reporting capability in order for requestors to be able to gain access to more meaningful insight from enhanced reports and dashboards, as well as      providing demand analysis to allow the Data Office to be better resourced to meet the current data strategy. We provide insight that helps leaders understand and improve performance and risk issues by delivering an evidence based performance framework that embeds organisational learning      outcomes.
  • Data Innovation & Service Improvement: Coordinates all Data Service Improvement and      Innovation activities including: data innovation, sharing, literacy, partnering, and service improvement and will look to create and embed a culture of continuous improvement across the Met. The team will work to on-board external partners to help develop shared data-led policing      solutions and will work to close data knowledge gaps, ensuring that appropriate levels of data literacy are in place across the Met in order for the data strategy to be realised.

The Data Office is the single place of accountability across the Met that:

  • Owns and drives the data compliance and analytics agenda.
  • Brings together the accountabilities that are currently dispersed across the Met business areas.
  • Consolidates and further develops existing Met data and insight services.
  • Enables data sharing and collaboration to serve the public and external partners.

The Role

You’ll work within our Data Office, which manages data governance, reporting and analytics, and innovation and service improvement. Here, you’ll design, build and maintain automated workflows that extract, process and present data from corporate systems. You could be working on a simple request for data one day, and a Tableau dashboard the next. You may also be looking at geographic data, for example, geocoding data sources so they can be viewed on a map.

In essence, you’ll be improving the range, quality and usability of our information. It’s important that you can write SQL script to transform, aggregate and normalise data and ensure that reporting processes are as efficient as possible. To build FACT and dimension tables and develop the suite of measures presented using Tableau, you’ll need to be a capable data engineer with experience in an analytical or reporting role.

With this background, you’ll have experience of building ETL processes using SQL Server, Alteryx or FME. And you’ll understand the principles of relational database design. You’ll also know how to organise data in line with recognised standards and share it securely. Good with people and great in a team, you can convey data findings clearly in person and on paper.
