Are you looking for a new challenge? Do you want to put your research skills to the test? Keen to be part of what keeps London safe every day?

The Metropolitan Police is the UK’s largest police service, serving one of the most diverse cities in the world. The threats facing London are constant and ever-evolving; emerging technologies and a growing population make the risks greater than ever…this is why we need Intelligence Researchers. We want people who can identify clues that aren’t obvious, who realise not everything is what it seems and know that not all weapons look the same.

Working for Met Intelligence (MO2) you will be at the forefront of the unique challenge of policing London. Our structure enables the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to receive a clear picture of threats and priorities across London, informing how best to task officers, staff and assets to respond effectively.

Duties and responsibilities

Your primary role will involve collating information from various police systems and partner agencies to be evaluated by an intelligence analyst. By articulating crime problems in terms of the who, what, where, when and how, this will support the analyst to establish the why. Whilst responsibilities can vary, common tasks include creating summaries of a subject’s criminal history for officers and analysts, reading crime reports to identify similarities and researching different police tactics to recognise and promote best practice.

As one of the world’s leading police service, we investigate some of the most complex and high profile cases. By joining Met Intelligence, you will form a key part of the research and analytical function, helping to put intelligence at the heart of our operational response and offering you a variety of opportunities to get involved with making London the safest global city.

Key Tasks

What does the average day look like? Your core duties will include:

  • Assisting with identifying crime trends, series and offenders of note by scanning information from a number of sources and databases and presenting key findings verbally and in written form.
  • Supporting intelligence analysts in understanding crime problems through research of information systems to identify potential drivers, locations and people of note.
  • Researching various information sources and providing summaries of people involved in offending to support investigations.
  • Assisting analysts in the compilation of any standard products such as tasking products.
  • Liaising closely with  police officers, colleagues from other parts of the MPS and other partner agencies to develop a wider understanding of a crime picture – this is done face to face, via telephone, email and Microsoft Teams.
  • Working closely with colleagues in other departments to obtain information to inform research and analytical products.
  • Completing basic mapping of crime to identify hotspots or locations of interest.
