Job Title: SO15 - CASU - Operational Network Engineer

Salary: £45,192 to £49,280 plus a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £45,192 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £49,280 will be via incremental progression.

Job Summary

This position is within SO15 – Covert Asset Support Unit (CASU) - Technical Operations.


CASU provides surveillance support to CT operations by providing staff to the Counter Terrorism Operations Room and deploying covert assets. The role of CASU Tech Ops Network Engineer is to manage and maintain the SO15 network in support of the CT Network.

        

Key Tasks

The post holder will be required to do the following:

  • To provide practical technical support by means of a working knowledge of a broad range of engineering subjects (detailed below)
  • Participation in an 'on call' rota in order to provide an operational response capability, in accordance with MPS staff terms and conditions and allowances.

  • Supervisory responsibility for Band I Engineers
  • Requirement to work unsociable hours on occasion, possibly at short notice
  • Requirement to work in difficult and challenging environments, subject to the appropriate risk assessment process and mitigation measures being put in place.

  • Interaction with members of the public, in a professional manner, whilst maintaining confidentiality in sensitive environments

  • Keeping abreast of developments in relevant technologies, e.g. via trade journals, exhibitions, seminars etc., and to identify alternative equipment options and improvements in order to enhance operational capabilities

  • Driving MPS vehicles

  • Working with sensitive and classified information, in a covert environment

  • Deploying operationally where needed in and around London and surrounding areas

Key Skills

The post holder must have:

  • A HNC/HND or degree in a relevant subject or recognised engineering training e.g. armed forces training or apprenticeship.
  • The role requires a working knowledge of a broad range of engineering subjects including:
  • Cisco networking
  • IT software and hardware
  • Transmission systems including frequency spectrum, modulation methods, antennas, IP radio, mobile phone networks (2G, 3G, 4G), RF equipment
  • Telecommunications or Data-communications
  • IP networks and wireless links
  • Engineering documentation
  • Switch & Firewall configuration

Experience

At least 3 years post-training experience of installation and maintenance of electronic equipment and systems.

Desirables

A working knowledge of:

  • Video and audio standards and compression techniques, video and audio recording including NVR’s and mass storage of date
  • Video Monitoring Systems
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Telecoms services
  • GPS
  • Operational experience of deployments of audio, CCTV and associated transmission
  • Experience of supervision of technical staff.
  • Experience of specification, evaluation and procurement of technical equipment.
  • Experience of technical project management.

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Developed Vetting (DV) level before taking up the post.

Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) OR Developed Vetting (DV) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.

Essential Criteria

One or more of the following qualifications/skills are essential to the role and proof will be required at Interview:

  • A HNC/HND or degree in a relevant subject or recognised engineering training e.g. armed forces training or apprenticeship.
  • College of Policing accreditation in technical operations skillset (i.e. deploying technical surveillance equipment) or an equivalent accreditation with other bodies such as Law Enforcement Agencies, MOD or Services Agency.
  • BTEC, City & Guilds or NVQ in one of the following subjects:
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
  • CCTV/Security Systems Engineering.
  • IP networks and wireless links.
  • Video and audio standards and compression techniques, video and audio recording including NVRs and video monitoring systems.
  • Installing low voltage CCTV systems in industrial/commercial environments.
  • Transmission systems including frequency spectrum, modulation methods, antennas, IP radio, mobile phone networks & telecoms circuits.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of working in a similar role (e.g. in a law enforcement or military Technical Support Unit), to include front-line experience of operational deployments of audio, CCTV and associated transmission equipment.
  • Experience of supervision of technical staff.
  • Experience of specification, evaluation and procurement of technical equipment.
  • Experience of technical project management.

You could be someone who is currently working within the trade industry as a CCTV installer/electrician or you could be a university graduate with an engineering background looking to start a career in this field.
