Salary: £50,897 to £62,015 plus a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £50,897 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £62,015 will be via incremental progression.

The Metropolitan Police are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated and focused individual to join the HR Directorate as a Senior Strategic Lead in London.

As part of the HR Operations team, you will provide critical support to the Head of HR Operations, Director and Deputy Director of HR to enable the efficient running of their portfolios.

You’ll be joining an ambitious department responsible for attracting, developing, supporting and retaining our 47,000-person workforce. By joining us, you will provide strategic oversight, quality assurance and grip of all activity on behalf of the Head of HR Operations, Director and Deputy Director of HR. You will be responsible for acting independently, be empowered to make strategic decisions and evaluate risk, as well as deputising when required. You will act as an advisor, driving forwards continuous improvement to shape the role Private Office and wider directorate. Lastly, you will work in collaboration with senior stakeholders internally and externally to deliver in line with HR’s priorities and wider Met’s objectives.

For this role, we are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated and focused individual with previous experience working with executive level stakeholders in Corporate Services functions, preferably HR. This position is ideal for someone who is an effective decision maker, has strong communication skills and excellent attention to detail. You’ll enjoy working as part of a team, liaising with the Senior Leadership Team and subject-matter experts on a wide variety of complex and meaningful areas of HR to drive real change.

What would your day-to-day look like?

The Senior Strategic Lead role has a broad spectrum of key result areas, which may include:

  • Proactively tracking and assuring the input to corporate governance processes on behalf of HR, liaising with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure work is completed effectively and on time.
  • Coordinating and producing strategic documents, including strategic papers, briefing notes for meetings/decisions and responses to complaints. Collating and quality-assuring evidence from a range of sources to succinctly advise senior stakeholders on ‘hot’ topics.
  • Analysing data outputs to drive insights and develop strategic narratives for communications and briefs to internal/external stakeholder groups.
  • Coordinating the response to complaints, requests for information and media enquiries by testing facts/assumptions and challenging information where necessary. 
  • Building relationships and managing stakeholder interfaces between principals/their Private Offices by sharing information, building trust and finding solutions to challenges.
  • Leading and managing key projects and work packages on behalf of the Directors of HR by supporting others, coordinating activity and providing oversight to ensure outcomes are effectively delivered. 
  • Implement a unified and consistent reporting system to collate and review data outputs from across the HR directorate, producing core data products with insights and an agreed narrative on specific topics.
  • Gathering information on industry trends and leading practice to advise and inform the Directors of HR and SLT, with the purpose of identifying opportunities to drive change and informing new solutions.
  • Identifying continuous improvement opportunities and also larger scale transformational changes by reviewing current processes, tools and roles and responsibilities

This role’s working arrangements are hybrid, including both working from home and from the office (predominantly New Scotland Yard or Kilburn Police Station).

What do we expect of you?

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of how the HR strategy supports Met’s objectives and influences the wider HR operating model including centres of expertise, shared services and business partnering operations.
  • Knowledge of the typical interactions HR has with other Corporate Services functions (including L&D; Finance; Commercial; Digital) and other business groups (including Communications and Engagement; Strategy; Transformation).
  • Understanding of how the external environment (political, legal and economic) impacts the MPS and how HR may be impacted as a result of change.
  • Political acumen and understanding of the requirements of key external stakeholder groups (including other forces, MOPAC and the Home Office).
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word & Excel).

Experience

  • Providing high-level policy and strategy advice on complex or sensitive issues at a senior level.
  • Owning and influencing relationships with executives and senior leaders, acting as their trusted advisor and deputising where required.
  • Working independently to build stakeholder relations, liaising with internal stakeholders on relevant agendas and programmes of work.
  • Writing briefing materials, strategic papers and external correspondence to influence executive and board-level stakeholders and enable strategic decision making on issues of local and national importance.
  • Experience working with a range of stakeholders and working collaboratively to understand the business, operational, commercial and employee implications of decisions.
  • Experience of overseeing multi-stakeholder projects and programmes, from scoping projects, evaluating and recommending options, and implementation to deliver within agreed budgets and timescales.
  • Experience of working at pace and prioritising competing requirements to best achieve strategic goals.

Skills

  • Ability to demonstrate an inquisitive and outward-looking nature, searching for new information and research to understand alternative sources of good practice and wider trends.
  • Excellent personal resilience, and ability to work flexibly in ambiguous environments.
