Life as an Inspector



We’re building A New Met for London and focusing on:

  • Community crime fighting: as an inspector you’ll be the heart of helping your team to deliver policing that’s more connected to communities, regardless of role. This could be where communities know their local officers and where they help to shape priorities and we work with them to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. When victims call us for help, they must be satisfied with our response and when investigating crime, they must have confidence that we will undertake the right level of investigation that produces the right outcome. We know there’s more we can do to improve our service and how important strong leadership is.
  • Culture change: we will build a strong healthy culture that embeds policing by consent; our values and principles throughout all we do. Our Inspectors will bring those values to life for their teams; will prioritise the Londoners we serve in everything we do above what is right for the Met.  You’ll create an environment for your people where they feel included; are clear on the standards expected and led by your example are confident to tackle those who fall short of our standards
  • Fixing our foundations: we will make sure our people – especially on the frontline – have what they need to do the job well. You’ll help set your team up to succeed through the training, kit, equipment and support they need to do the job well.

About you:

To be eligible to apply for this process, you must

  1. Be a current substantive Inspector or Detective Inspector by 29, January 2024.
  2. Have completed the Work Based Assessment or OSPRE part II (with written evidence and sign off of this).
  3. Have an overall competent or exceptional PDR rating for the last performance year.
  4. Meet the MPS attendance management criteria.
  5. Be free of any bar to promotion as a result of discipline outcomes.
  6. Be currently working for a Home Office force or BTP. 
  7. All mandatory training to be up to date.
  8. Have completed a professional standards declaration within Oleeo.

All expressions of interest must be submitted by 23.55 on Monday 4th March 2024. There is no competency based application form for this process.
