The vision of the Metropolitan Police Service is to make London safe for everyone. We are radically changing to deliver high-quality policing services in a more efficient and cost-effective way, in line with the Mayor of London’s Police and Crime Plan.  Our operational policing fleet comprises of over 5000 vehicles, 1000 pedal cycles and 25 marine vessels.  Vehicles are a workplace for our officers and staff, carrying sophisticated equipment for operational policing, or providing a safe environment for the transport of the public and prisoners.  By their very nature, vehicles are often used in the most arduous and challenging conditions.

About Fleet Services

MO11 Fleet Services form part of the ‘Met Operations’ business group, providing pan-London support to support policing across the Capital.  Fleet Services are responsible for all aspects of fleet lifecycle management to the Metropolitan Police Service, including vehicle maintenance.  Fleet Services are also responsible for the service, maintenance and repair of police vehicles and vessels that are ‘retained’ by the Metropolitan Police Service; specifically, those assets where service, maintenance and repair activities are completed at our purpose-built workshops by our in-house team of dedicated technicians and support staff.

The main duties of this role

The role of Supply Chain Manager sits within our Retained Fleet Services function, operating out of workshop facility in Belvedere.  The role holder will form part of the workshop leadership team and be required to lead a small team within the parts department to provide exceptional service to our suppliers and police officers alike.  The role holder will:

  • Be responsible for the daily operations of our parts department, including the line management responsibility for six members of staff.
  • Be required to work as part of the workshop leadership team to champion continuous improvement across the workshop. We can’t stand still, and the role holder must have a proven record of taking responsibility and executing concurrent projects to a high standard.
  • Support the Workshop Operations Manager by playing a key role in the development of the supply chain of vehicle components to maximise vehicle availability.
  • Improve stock holding availability and ensure that fast-moving components are in stock to improve vehicle availability
  • Build and maintain relationships with suppliers, representing the MPS when dealing with external organisations.
  • Gather requirements for potential solutions and mapping existing processes to champion continuous improvement
  • Ensure implementation of change activity to processes are completed effectively and that related training and communication to customers and employees are completed in a timely manner
  • To ensure established communication channels with all levels of staff are maintained and used to obtain regular feedback
  • To ensure that service supports the highest standards of customer service and will maximise customer satisfaction
  • Generate and present applicable reports to senior management, as well as operational and technical support teams and external clients
  • Proactively identify trends via data analysis and make recommendations for operational and service improvements
  • Enhance operational performance and decision making through the analysis of operational data and KPI (Key Performance Indicator) reports
  • Gain a detailed understanding of the management systems and be able to recommend changes in order to continuously improve the systems for the benefit of operational employees and analytics
  • Take responsibility for both your own and your team’s Personal Development and keep up to date with relevant standards and legislation

In return, we can offer

You’ll also enjoy the kind of great benefits that you’d expect from one of London's largest employers. These include annual leave, civil service pension arrangements, interest free season ticket loans, membership of Met sports and social clubs, flexible working conditions and many more.

  • 36 hours per week – Monday to Friday only with no weekend working

Your profile

We are looking for a Supply Chain Manager who has demonstrable experience as a Parts Department Manager or After Sales Manager in the automotive industry.  Our parts department is often described as ‘the beating heart’ of our workshop; quite simply without the constant flow of multi-brand vehicle parts our technicians will not be able to repair and maintain vehicles as effectively as they do today.  Our Supply Chain Manager will be inquisitive, challenging of existing processes and keen to lead their team through the next period of growth.  We’re looking for somebody who has experience in leading and driving change, working towards (and exceeding!) departmental performance indicators.

We recognise that we are not a traditional ‘main dealer’ – we’re responsible for the maintenance of hundreds of varieties of vehicles and we know that it may take a short period of time for you to learn ‘the Met way’, however we’re willing to train and coach the right candidate, who will already have a genuine interest in motor vehicles and a passion for wanting to provide great service.  It’s important to recognise that we are not a ‘traditional’ main dealer and we are working to provide an efficient service to officers to Keep the Met Moving.  We’re looking to find candidates who have:

  • The ability to build, lead and inspire their team
  • The ability to communicate at all levels and to communicate technical solutions to non-technical people
  • The ability to develop, generate and present performance reports to senior management
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Proven stakeholder and supplier management experience
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Ability to make constructive challenge
  • Ability to analyse and document complex business processes
  • A full Category B driving licence is essential
  • A motor industry recognised technical qualification (such as a C&G Level 3 in Vehicle Parts Principles or equivalent) would be highly desirable
