About Fleet Services

The main duties of this role

The role of Motor Vehicle Technician sits within our Retained Fleet Services function, operating out of flagship workshop facility in Belvedere.  The role holder will play a key role in our team to ensure that vehicles serviced and maintained promptly and effectively and are ready for essential police operations.  The role holder will:

  • Reduce vehicle maintenance costs and maximise fleet availability by ensuring repairs on the vehicle fleet are timely and necessary.
  • Support the Technical Supervisors to maintain the delivery of an effective and efficient service.
  • Accurately determine the serviceability of all vehicle components, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic; using industry recognised tools and equipment.
  • Visually inspect and road test vehicles, interpreting feedback from the vehicle’s correct function.
  • Diagnose electrical faults accurately, using high and low technology electrical test equipment to ensure they achieve or exceed vehicle manufacturers’ standards.
  • Accurately record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary.
  • Maintain high technology test equipment to configure / reconfigure the appropriate system correctly.
  • Accurately follow the ‘end to end’ process for each manufacturer’s warranty process.
  • Read, interpret and analyse wiring diagrams, making use of interactive guides available from various manufacturers’ diagnostic equipment and web-based mediums.
  • Follow multiple manufacturers’ repair instructions, specific methods and techniques.
  • Take responsibility for personal development and keep up to date with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Continuously understand wider Met activity and decision making to assess potential impact on local delivery.
  • Transfer knowledge and skills to apprentices / less technical staff.

We will provide the following additional specific training:

  • Additional police specialist warning equipment and communication systems
  • High technology surveillance equipment
  • Specialist vehicle conversions
  • Vehicle examination processes for maintenance and repair in line with police policy

Your profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic motor vehicle technician to join our workshop technical team.  You will have demonstrable experience as a motor vehicle technician in the automotive industry, which may have been obtained through main dealer or independent networks.  Our vehicles are unique – you will be servicing some of the most high profile vehicles used in policing across the country.  They are used arduously, and are fitted with additional emergency warning and communications equipment, which you’ll be trained to repair too.  You’ll work methodically according to our published SOPs, and will be a great team player who is able to perform well under pressure.  We recognise that we are not a traditional ‘main dealer’ – we’re responsible for the maintenance of hundreds of varieties of vehicles and we know that it may take a short period of time for you to learn ‘the Met way’, however we’re willing to train and coach the right candidate, who will already have a passion for wanting to provide great service and bring significant experience in a similar automotive environment.  We are working to provide an efficient service to Police Officers across London in order to ‘Keep the Met Moving’.  We’re looking to find candidates who have:

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and engage with staff and officers at all levels.
  • The confidence to work both as part of a team and independently
  • A methodical and thorough approach.
  • Effective decision making based on sound judgement.
  • The ability to prioritise your workload according to conflicting demand.

Applicants should have:

  • 4 years’ relevant experience (Essential)
  • NVQ Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent) (Essential)
  • DVLA driving licence (Category B entitlement) (Essential)
  • DVLA licence with C1 & D1 / C or C+E driving categories (Desirable)
  • DVSA Nominated Tester (Desirable)
  • HGV repair and maintenance experience (Desirable)
  • Experience of working with a wide range of manufacturers (Desirable)
  • ATA accredited to diagnostic technician level or equivalent (Desirable)
