Location: Bow Police Station, London E3 2AN with an expectation to travel to other Mounted branch bases subject to demand.

Period of posting – Position subject to an initial 3 month review.

Part time – 60% cover split over 3 days x 1 position

 Role & Responsibilities:

The Metropolitan Police Service currently have approx. 100 horses enabling Mounted branch officers and staff to carry out policing duties within our Capital city on horseback. Our stock includes young recently purchased horses with limited experience of shoeing.

Our horses are used for patrols within London streets and the policing of sporting events/ demonstrations and ceremonial duties.

Our farriers are a crucial part of the policing picture who maintain a structured programme of shoeing and maintenance of the horse’s feet and shoes.

We are seeking a part time Farrier to join an existing team of 3. The ability to manage a demanding work load is essential with the ability to identify issues at the earliest stage to prevent lameness. You will manage and make shoes for the horse’s regular 4 week shoeing schedule. You may have to deal with last minute demands for thrown shoes or hoof injuries. An ability to work alone and part of a small team is essential.

Excellent communication skills is essential. You will liaise with Mounted Branch Police officers and staff and provide advice with regards to a horses’ shoes and ongoing foot health.

You will be responsible for the care and maintenance of the provided tools and vehicle (which will be left at the base overnight). A full clean driving licence is essential as travel between the Mounted Branch bases will be required. Very occasionally, our farriers are required to be on ‘standby’ at high profile events to deal with any shoeing emergencies.

The 60 % will be split over 3 days ensuring cover across the department. The actual days can be flexible but within Monday – Friday.
