Job title:              Motorcycle Technician

Salary:                Starting at £36,140 inclusive of location allowance rising to £39,179 through annual increments.

Purpose

Working as part of a team to keep London safe by ensuring a safe, fit-for-purpose and available vehicle fleet at the lowest possible cost to address operational policing demands and meet externally set standards and with a specific purpose to:

  • Maintain covert and specialist fleet within Fleet Services’ specialist workshop by providing efficient scheduled and unscheduled maintenance repairs on the motorcycle fleet.
  • Reduce motorcycle maintenance costs and maximise fleet availability by ensuring repairs on the motorcycle fleet are timely and necessary.

Key responsibilities

Work as part of a team to ensure delivery of Fleet Services’ strategic priorities, support a culture of organisational learning and sustain the wellbeing of self and others. This role has specific responsibility to:

  • Support the Technical Supervisors to maintain the delivery of an effective and efficient service.
  • Accurately determine the serviceability of all motorcycle components, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic; using industry recognised tools and equipment.
  • Visually inspect and road test vehicles, interpreting feedback from the vehicles correct function.
  • Diagnose electrical faults accurately, using high and low technology electrical test equipment to ensure they achieve minimum (or exceed) vehicle manufacturers’ standards.
  • Accurately record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary.
  • Maintain high technology test equipment to configure / reconfigure the appropriate system correctly.
  • Accurately follow the ‘end to end’ process for each manufacturer’s warranty process.
  • Read, interpret and analyse wiring diagrams, making use of interactive guides available from various manufacturers’ diagnostic equipment and web-based mediums.
  • Follow multiple manufacturers’ repair instructions, specific methods and techniques.
  • Take responsibility for personal development and keep up to date with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Continuously understand wider Met activity and decision making to assess potential impact on local delivery.
  • Transfer knowledge and skills to apprentices / less technical staff.

Knowledge

  • Health and Safety in Motor Vehicle Repair and Associated Industries (HSG261).
  • All motorcycle platforms and operating systems including mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems for all makes of motorcycles.
  • All maintenance and repair procedures, the measured tools and calculations required to make professional decisions on serviceability of all safety related items.
  • All workshop tools, machinery and equipment and a full understanding of its intended use and calibration requirements.
  • All vehicle manufacturers’ vehicle warranty processes and diagnostic equipment.
  • Awareness of general risk assessments, COSHH regulations and Health and Safety regulations, pertinent to the vehicle maintenance industry.
  • Vehicle systems and various repair methods.
  • Manufacturer specific diagnostic equipment and diagnostic reporting.

Will work towards having knowledge and application of:

  • Additional police warning and communication systems, high technology surveillance equipment fitted.
  • Specific vehicle conversions and unique specialist on board equipment.
  • Vehicle examination processes for maintenance and repair in line with police policy and Vehicle Standards Agency.

Essential criteria

• At least 4 years relevant experience within the motorcycle repair industry.

• NVQ Level 2 in Motorcycle Maintenance or equivalent.

• DVLA licence with Category A.

 Desirable criteria

  • DVLA licence with C1 & D1 / C or C+E driving categories.
  • DVSA Nominated Tester.
  • Working with a wide range of manufacturers.
  • ATA accredited to diagnostic technician level or equivalent.
