Uncover the evidence, and discover your career

At the Met, our Forensic Services provide a vital response to London’s most complex policing challenges. The team are at the very forefront of investigations, delivering a wide range of technical and scientific expertise to help solve crimes. Now, we’re looking for Assistant Forensic Practitioners. It’s your chance to apply your lateral thinking and problem-solving skills, and get the training to become an Assistant Forensic Practitioner.

This is a rare opportunity to build your career as part of our 24/7 - 365 front line crime scene examination response. Through a structured programme of learning and development, you’ll learn how to identify, record and recover crucial forensic evidence to support investigations. It’s a physically demanding role, where you’ll need excellent attention to detail, and a methodical approach. However, as you help bring offenders to justice, you’ll find it’s just as rewarding.

You’ll work alongside senior colleagues in a busy shift team on a combination of early, late and night shifts (including weekends and bank holidays). In exchange, we offer a shift disturbance allowance. With a combination of mentoring and formal classroom studies, our intensive development programme is designed to produce highly skilled, fully-fledged Practitioners.

Please note that the successful candidate will be required to attend court to present evidence. You may also, on occasion, have to deal with incidents of a distressing nature and attend mortuaries to record forensic evidence.

This role will be subject to medical checks and security vetting.

Professional Qualifications:

We’re looking for at least five A*-C grade GCSEs (or equivalent) including English, Maths and a Science subject, plus at least two A*-C grade A-levels (or equivalent) – a Science subject is preferable. Alternatively, we’ll accept College of Policing Crime Scene Investigation Training (level 1).

You should also bring good communication and IT skills, plus a full clean manual driving license (held for at least a year). Above all, you need the motivation to complete your training so you can apply your skills and deliver an excellent forensic response to crime in London.
